A combo occurs when clearing one set of blocks immediately enables another clear without placing a new piece. Each successive clear in the chain applies a multiplier to your score.
- •Trigger condition
A combo starts the moment one clear causes another clear in the same move. This can happen when falling blocks complete a second row or column.
- •Score multiplier
Each combo level applies a multiplier: 2-chain gives 2x, 3-chain gives 3x, and so on. The multiplier stacks with your base block points for massive totals.
- •Combo reset
If you place a piece and no clear occurs, the combo counter resets. This is why planning setups in advance is critical to maintaining long chains.
Types of Combos
2-Chain Combo
The most common combo type. Two rows or columns clear simultaneously or sequentially from a single placement. Earns a 2x multiplier on both clears.
3-Chain Combo
Three consecutive clears from one placement. Requires careful pre-setup with three near-complete lines. Earns a 3x multiplier and significantly boosts score.
Cascade Combo
Occurs when cleared blocks allow others to fall and complete additional lines automatically. Cascades can produce 4 or 5-chain combos if the board is set up correctly.
How to Set Up Combos
1Identify near-complete rows
Scan the board for rows or columns that are one or two blocks away from clearing. These are your combo opportunities.
2Stack multiple near-complete lines
Before triggering any clear, build two or three near-complete lines in parallel. This lets one piece complete all of them at once.
3Choose the right completing piece
Select a piece that fills the gap in all your near-complete lines simultaneously. Long horizontal pieces are ideal for clearing multiple rows.
4Trigger at peak setup
Wait until your setup is maximized before triggering the combo. Patience here is what separates average players from top scorers.
Advanced Combo Strategies
Pre-load the Board
Spend the first several moves building a dense, near-complete board without triggering any clears. Then execute a multi-chain combo to cash in all at once.
Cross-axis Chaining
Set up both row and column clears simultaneously. When a horizontal clear also completes a vertical column, you earn combos in two axes at once.
Special Block Combos
Time special blocks like bombs and area clears to fire in the middle of an existing chain. This extends the combo length and adds bonus multiplier points.
